The craft of Ajrakh

Ajrakh is a traditional hand-block-printing craft practised in Kutch, Gujarat. Artisans use carved wooden blocks to build intricate patterns, carefully aligning each impression by hand. The cloth moves through repeated stages of printing, dyeing, washing and sun-drying—a patient process that gives the print its depth and character.

Here, Ajrakh meets handwoven Kala cotton and carefully stitched piping, bringing together the work of the loom, the printing block and the finishing stitch.

This fabric carries the rhythm of a family loom in Kutch through our Reyaan community.

It is woven by Manji Bhai, who has spent more than 30 years at the loom. In his home, weaving is part of everyday life — the steady movement of the shuttle and the quiet rhythm of the loom shaping fabric thread by thread.

For this textile, Kala cotton is used — an indigenous cotton grown in the dry landscapes of western India. Resilient and naturally adapted to the region, it has been part of local textile traditions for generations.

Once the yarn is set on the loom, the fabric takes form as a clean, handwoven surface — simple, breathable, and grounded.

From here, the fabric moves into the hands of Ajrakh printers.

Ajrakh is a craft that has lived in Kutch for over 400 years, carried forward through generations of artisan families. The fabric goes through a slow, layered process — often up to 16 steps of printing, dyeing, washing, and drying.

Natural dyes like indigo and madder are built gradually, with patterns emerging step by step.

There is a rhythm to this too — different from the loom, but just as precise.

The result is a textile shaped by multiple hands, where weaving and printing come together — carrying depth, variation, and the quiet time of the processes behind it.
